"Melbourne 2030 is the Government's blueprint for managing growth and change across metropolitan Melbourne and the surrounding region for the next 30 years. A clear policy direction arising from Melbourne 2030 is to maintain Victoria's position as the nation's premier logistics centre. Melbourne 2030 recognises that the Port has considerable scope to grow and use its existing land more effectively. It also acknowledges a major constraint on the future of the Port is the depth of the shipping channels in Port Phillip.

To protect Victoria's competitive position, Melbourne 2030 sees the Port of Hastings providing a long-term option for future port development recognising that major development at Hastings would not be undertaken while Melbourne (and Geelong) continue to meet the State's needs. The Government will act to ensure that land and access corridors are preserved to allow for the potential of the Port of Hastings to accommodate container trade in the longer term. In the short to medium term, development at the Port of Hastings is likely to be focused on specific opportunities in the break and breakbulk trades."
