| Hon. John Brumby MLA
Minister for State and Regional Development Dear Mr Brumby, Opposition to Relocating Coode Island Chemical Storage Facility to Any Part of Port Phillip Coast The Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc., a federation of 15 conservation organizations around Port Phillip Bay, which includes, on the western coast of Port Phillip, the Geelong Environment Council Inc., Friends of Williamstown Wetlands Inc. and Friends of Westona Wetlands Inc., has informed the previous State Government on a number of occasions that it is firmly opposed to any proposal to relocate the Coode Island Chemical Storage Facility to any part of the coastline of Port Phillip Bay. We note the present representations being made by a Footscray-based organization, and by the Australian Conservation Foundation Inc., of which we are a Member Body. We wish to inform your Government that we would be alarmed if the Victorian Government were to propose that any part of the Port Phillip coastline should be planned to accommodate such a facility. We support the approach of your Government, and the former Kennett Government, to take measures to greatly increase the safety and security at the Coode Island site, which has already had the facility imposed on it for most of the twentieth century, and has negligible significant residual natural environment values compared with other possible sites around Port Phillip. The Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc. congratulates you and the Government on the present stand you are taking. Yours sincerely,
Geoffrey Goode
