Senator Hon. Robert Hill
Dear Senator Hill, I am writing to you to inform you that Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc., a federation of fifteen conservation organizations around Port Phillip, unanimously passed the following motion at its General Meeting last month, held at the Hobsons Bay City Council Corporate Centre, Civic Parade, Altona: "That Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc. write to the Minister
for Defence, with copies to the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition,
and the Minister for Heritage and Environment, requesting that the Commonwealth
Government, in view of its important national and international responsibilities
under its environmental powers and legislation, and its external affairs
powers and obligations, take action to ensure that the remaining areas
of land held for defence purposes bordering Port Phillip Bay; at Point
Cook airfield, the Point
Wilson area, Swan Island, and Portsea;
are given a secure conservation status as soon as they cease to be required
for defence purposes."
We ask the Government to take action to ensure that the remaining areas of open space land instanced above be given a secure conservation status once they cease to be needed for defence. These areas are some of the very few remaining large open space land areas bordering Port Phillip. Port Phillip Conservation Council Inc. applauds the generally excellent management of the above defence areas over a very long period, and considers that they are some of the most important conservation areas around this very heavily populated part of the Australian coast. We would appreciate receiving a reply indicating the extent to which the Government might agree with the above proposal. Yours sincerely,
Geoffrey Goode
cc. Hon. John Howard MHR, Prime Minister of Australia;
